Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
