The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any prominent honors show approaches, you'll find an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
