A recent study suggests that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People using these treatments should be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
