Entire Career of Income Inadequate for UK Labor Force to Become Part of Wealthiest 10%, Study Says

Based on new analysis, the average worker in the UK would need over five decades of salary to achieve the net worth of the richest 10% nationwide.

Growing Financial Divide Over Time

This research examined net worth statistics covering the 2020-22 timeframe and found that in the pre-financial crisis era, it would have needed nearly four decades of typical employment income to reach the wealthiest decile of the economic ladder.

A research lead part of the report stated: "Financial divides in Britain are currently so significant that a average worker accumulating their complete salary during their working years would continue to be incapable to achieve the peak of the financial hierarchy."

Assessing the Economic Gap

The study discovered that the gap between the assets of the median citizen and someone in the top 10% was one million pounds in the pre-crisis period, but had widened to £1.3 million in inflation-adjusted terms by the pandemic years.

The researcher added: "These differences are doubly concerning as wealth mobility in Britain is low – people that start life affluent tend to stay wealthy, and the opposite holds true."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Even with the wealth gap expanding in actual numbers, the portion of overall assets in the UK owned by the wealthiest families – termed "comparative financial divide" – has been "largely unchanged since the 1980s era," as stated in the analysis.

During this period, complete net worth in the UK rose substantially from triple the yearly economic output, to nearly seven and a half times.

Contributors of Wealth Inequality

So-called "unearned" appreciation, via growing real estate costs and variations in pension valuations, were the primary factors of the growing financial disparity since 2010, per the report.

These appreciations generally flowed to senior citizens with real estate, the analysis reveals – worsening the age-based economic gap.

Intergenerational Wealth Disparities

The typical financial disparity between thirty-somethings and people aged 60-64 grew by more than 100% in actual value, from £135,000 in pre-financial crisis, to £310,000.

Regional Disparities

Furthermore, the study revealed significant regional variations, with the median value of assets in 2020-22 standing at £290k in the SE of England, where housing costs have typically increased quickly, as opposed to 110 thousand pounds in the northeastern region.

COVID Era Effects

During the pandemic, when millions of workers were supported by the government-supported job retention program, and Covid shutdowns curtailed consumption options, the data shows countless homes were able to save, growing their net worth.

More affluent homes fared much better, however. "The typical family in the poorest fifth saw their available funds rise by merely £80 over the pandemic period (2019-20 to 2021-22), broadly the same as the two years pre-pandemic. On the other hand, the average household in the wealthiest fifth saw their cash reserves increase by £4,200," the study reveals.
