A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant growth of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national projects.
